Invitation for talks | | | Mainstream politicians from Kashmir getting an invitation to attend All Party Meeting on Kashmir to be chaired by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, could be the last opportunity for the Kashmir centric leaders. If they don’t fall in the line they can end up becoming irrelevant forever. All the traditional politicians in Kashmir have been struggling to stay afloat after August 5, 2019—when the Centre abrogated J&K’s special status and bifurcated it into two union territories—they had come together after they were released from detention last year. National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Conference and few other smaller parties formed Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) and vowed to get everything back that J&K lost after the Centre’s August 5 decision. The cracks within the PAGD developed soon after the government announced to hold District Development Council (DDC) elections last year as the constituents of the amalgam despite contesting the polls collectively fielded proxy candidates against each other. Soon after the results of the DDC polls were declared, the Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone pulled out from the amalgam. Even the DDC chairpersons were elected on the single party basis. Move of the Kashmir centric parties to come together backfired. The PAGD has lost its credibility and it exists merely on the papers now. None of the Kashmir based leaders have tried to say that they won’t attend the APM called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It seems that Kashmir centric leaders don’t want to commit any mistake this time around as they are still paying a heavy price for boycotting the Panchayat elections that were held 2-years ago. At that point of time both NC and PDP had stayed away from the process and had termed it a “futile exercise” but the time has proven it that it was a big blunder which the leaders of these parties committed. PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, who has been projecting herself as the “only leader” in Kashmir and has been opposing the new policies of the Centre, seems to have softened her stand and has not said no to talks. It appears that Valley based leaders have accepted the change in status-quo. They need to bear in mind that they have to attend the APM for their good and if they throw tantrums it would mean that they have hit a dead end and their political journeys are over.
