Exercise Expedited
7/9/2021 12:18:53 AM
The ongoing visit of Delimitation Commission to Jammu and Kashmir is a clear indication that the exercise to redraw assembly and parliamentary constituencies in the union territory has been expedited. Assembly polls in J&K are likely to be held soon after the delimitation process is completed. The panel has met representatives of various political parties in Jammu as well as Kashmir divisions. All the parties barring the Peoples Democratic Party led by Mehbooba Mufti have met the commission and put forth their views. Prior to the J&K visit of the Delimitation Commission, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, had chaired an All Party Meeting of political parties from Jammu and Kashmir to give them a chance to become a part of mainstream and play their role in the development of the union territory. Most of the Kashmir centric parties have fallen in line but the PDP remains the only political party that wants to beat around the bush. New Delhi is keen on holding assembly elections in J&K and there is every possibility about the polls being held early next year. After the delimitation exercise gets completed, Jammu region would get its due share in the assembly as for the past 70-years, the Kashmir region has sent more MLAs to the assembly than Jammu and leaders from Kashmir never allowed any Dogra to become a chief minister of the erstwhile State. When the delimitation exercise was announced, the Kashmir centric parties had opposed the move tooth and nail. They were aware of the fact that once the delimitation process gets completed they would lose their supremacy. The delimitation exercise would empower the Jammu region and end the decades old discrimination that people of Jammu have faced. The ball is in the court of Jammu based leaders. An opportunity is knocking at their doors. They have to ensure that they become the representatives of the Jammu people in truesense and provide them with everything they have been deprived of during all these years. The delimitation panel has met the politicians and the people from different sections of the society during its ongoing J&K visit and is collecting feedback from everyone. By now, the panel would have got a clear idea about how Jammu was sidelined by the Kashmir centric politicians. Long wait of the Jammu people is all set to get over as in the next few months things will be crystal clear.
