Arbitrary decisions crippling Jammu’s economy
7/16/2021 11:21:14 PM
The Jammu and Kashmir Government cancelling Amarnath Yatra for the second consecutive year disappointed the devotees yet again. But people understood that the decision was taken due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the rush of tourists at various resorts across Kashmir indicates that the decision to cancel the Amarnath pilgrimage was a hasty one. The question that most of the people are asking is if the tourists are visiting Kashmir in hordes then why was the Amarnath Yatra called off?
According to the media reports and the pictures that have gone viral on the social media, the COVID-19 sops are being violated with impunity in Kashmir. The government seems in no mood to restrict the assembly of too many people at one place.
When the J&K Government announced its decision to call off the Amarnath Yatra many people across the country were of the opinion that the administration could have waited. But no attention was paid to the suggestions that were put forward. One of the suggestions that was put forth was that the pilgrimage should be held by restricting the number of pilgrims but that idea was not even considered.
If the government wants to prevent the third wave of COVID-19 from wreaking havoc in J&K, then it needs to wake up. If the tourists keep on visiting the health resorts and keep on violating the norms, it can lead to a catastrophe. If the J&K Government believes that the COVID-19 is over then it should throw open everything and explain why it cancelled the Amarnath Yatra in a jiffy.
The cancellation of the annual pilgrimage has affected the business community in Jammu as the arrival of pilgrims from different parts of the country used to be a major activity in Jammu in summer months.
Traders in Jammu region have been left in lurch due to the arbitrary decisions taken by the J&K Government in the recent past. Last month an order was issued to call off the 149-year old Durbar Move practice. Due to shifting of the Civil Secretariat from Srinagar to Jammu in winter many people from Kashmir used to visit Jammu and stay here for 6-months. Arrival of people from Kashmir used to give a boost to the economic activities in Jammu region but this year businessmen in the winter capital will have nothing to look forward for. It seems that the government has decided to cripple Jammu in every possible way. The recent decisions are ample proof of it.
