Discrimination Continues
7/20/2021 12:17:10 AM
In yet another instance of Jammu being ignored even after abrogation of Article 370, the government has chosen Srinagar to install hi-tech air quality machine.
Only July 14 J&K got its first real-time air-quality monitoring station with the inauguration of the first ever Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station (CAAQMS) in Srinagar. The Jammu has been asked to wait till another machine comes.
The administration could have installed the first machine in Jammu but it preferred Srinagar. It’s not for the first time that Jammu has been ignored. It has been happening for the past seven decades. The Kashmir centric politicians, who ruled J&K since 1947, ensured that all the funds first reach Kashmir. Jammu was never a priority during the erstwhile political regimes.
After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcated the erstwhile princely state into two union territories— people of Jammu were told that now, they need not worry as the times have changed and they would get their due share. But the promise of ending discrimination with Jammu region has remained confined to papers only. During the past two years, the government has taken many steps to appease Kashmir and has ignored Jammu outrightly. After August 5, 2019, people of Jammu were of the opinion that the injustices they have faced during all these years would eventually end but for them nothing has changed. Kashmir continues to get preference and Jammu is getting the same treatment as it used to get prior to August 5, 2019.
People of Jammu are not against Kashmir getting the facilities.
They have always demanded that Jammu and Kashmir regions should be treated at par. Instead of one hi-tech air quality machine, two could have been installed, one in Jammu and another in Kashmir. It was no big deal. But the helmsmen seem in no mood to treat Jammu at par with Kashmir. They have taken many such decisions in the past which will have a direct impact on Jammu and its economy. On the other hand not much progress has been made on the development front. Many areas in Jammu are still waiting for the development to even begin. Roads and other projects are still in limbo. People of Jammu are still waiting for the day when the discrimination with them will end.
