Rain brings relief after week-long hot, humid weather in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, July 28: People finally had a sigh of relief after about a week-long hot and humid weather due to rain and thundershowers in the Kashmir valley, where the maximum temperature recorded about ten degree drop against Tuesday while the minimum temperature was still above normal.
However, several low-laying areas were inundated due to rain water while majority roads in the valley were also submerged due to faulty drainage system.
A weather department spokesman said this evening that there could be widespread light to moderate rain thundershowers in the Kashmir valley during the next 24 hours. Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rain and thundershowers would continue during the subsequent two days.
There was considerable top in the maximum temperature due to rain in the valley, providing much relief to people who experienced hot and humid weather during the past about a week.
Srinagar, one of the capital cities of Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded about ten degree drop in the maximum temperature on Wednesday against yesterday after 4 mm rainfall from 0830 hrs to 1700 hrs. Against yesterday's maximum temperature of 34.6 degree, today it was 24.5 degree, which was 5 notches below normal. However, the minimum temperature 21.5 degree, 2.8 notches above normal. Yesterday the minimum temperature was 24.6 degree. Several roads submerged in the city affecting transport and pedestrian movement.
He said the sky would be party cloudy to light rain and thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 29 degree and 20 degree respectively in Srinagar during the next 24 hours.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg also recorded drop in the maximum temperature though the minimum temperature remained above normal. Against yesterday's maximum temperature of 25 degree, which was 4.2 notches above normal, today it was 18 degree, minus 2.4 notches below normal. However, the minimum temperature was 15.5 degree, 3.1 degree above normal.
Pahalgam, a health resort in south Kashmir, maximum temperature witnessed seven degree drop. Against yesterday's 29.6 degree, 3.9 degree above normal, today it was 22.7 degree which was 2.4 degree below normal.
In North Kashmir, including Kupwara, a number of water bodies, including nallahs were overflowing due to cloud burst and heavy rain since last night.
Kupwara witnessed about ten degree drop in the maximum temperature after 18.7 mm rainfall. The maximum temperature on Wednesday was 25.1 degree against yesterday's 35.2 degree, which was 4.6 notches above normal. However, today it was 25.1 degree, 4.8 degree below normal.
