Farmers’ awareness camp on promotion of Lemongrass cultivation held at Seen Thakran village | | | eaRLY TIMES rEPORT
UDHAMPUR, Aug 18: A Farmers’ awareness programme regarding on-field introduction, promotion of Lemon grass was organized by Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in collaboration with Indian Institute of Integrated Medicine, Jammu at village Seen Thakran. The camp was held on the directions of Deputy Commissioner, Indu Kanwal Chib and over all supervision of Chief Agriculture Officer, Subhash Chander Sharma & District Agriculture Officer(Extn) .Alok Pandotra. A unique initiative has been taken jointly by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, and Indian Institute of Integrated Medicine(IIIM) Jammu and KVK Reasi to promote Lemon grass cultivation in the district. Sanjay Koushal, Scientist (Agronomy),KVK Reasi, gave a detailed deliberation on the package & practices to be adopted for the cultivation of lemon grass and its benefits. The participants were asked to switch over to cultivation of Lemon grass on the land that was earlier kept fallow due to monkey menace. They were told that Monkeys do not feed on lemon grass and its cultivation will help them to overcome the dent caused to their income. They were apprised that the lemon grass cultivation would help in income generation by means of extracting lemon grass oil and other processed products like incense sticks that are highly in demand in the market. Lemon grass oil is also believed to be one of the disinfectants, anti-fungal, anti-viral, immunity booster and is used for multi-purpose tasks. Besides, Lemon grass requires very less investment of labour and money as compared to cultivation of other crops. |
