Hasty Decision
8/30/2021 11:29:40 PM
The Jammu and Kashmir administration has decided to reopen colleges and universities across the Union Territory but with a condition that only those staff members and students can join who have been vaccinated. The decision has surprised many people as it has come at a time when the experts are predicting that third wave of COVID-19 may hit the country.
On one hand the authorities are making preparations to handle the possible third wave of the pandemic, while on the other it wants to reopen the colleges and varsities. When the first wave of the COVID-19 subsided, the authorities ordered reopening of educational institutions, including schools, in a jiffy which led to schools, colleges and universities turning into COVID-19 hotspots and the number of cases swelled within a span of a few days. It seems that the helmsmen are set to commit the same mistake again. They seem to be in a hurry.
During the past few days there has been a marginal increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in J&K and the positive cases are outnumbering the recoveries. In a few states the third wave has already arrived and doctors are stating that the new variant of COVID-19 is more dangerous and deadly.
Many people are of the opinion that the educational institutions should be reopened after the threat of third wave subsides. But the helmsmen in J&K are thinking otherwise. Still many people have not got vaccinated due to them being hesitant or the doses being unavailable. There is a long way to go as the virus has not gone yet. It continues to be there. If the third wave has to be kept at bay then people should not be allowed to gather at one place.
According to the COVID-19 guidelines not more than 25 people can assemble at one place then how can hundreds of students be allowed to gather in colleges and universities? The threat of COVID-19 third wave is real and the people denying it are living in fools’ paradise. We cannot become complacent and allow things to happen. We have to control COVID-19 by denying it a chance to raise its ugly head again.
For the past two years we have been patient and it’s just a matter of a few months more before the pandemic is defeated but hasty decisions can lead to yet another catastrophe.
