Doda: 81-year disabled old man declared dead, name removed from PMAY list

Jammu, Sept 1: An 81-year old disabled man in Doda district has been shown dead to remove his name from the list of beneficiaries of centrally sponsored scheme Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) under which houses are provided to the poor people.
Abdul Ghaffar—resident of Ghat block falling under Panchayat Dhara-A in Doda district—had enrolled himself under PMAY but the officials of the Rural Development Department allegedly removed his name from the list of beneficiaries to accommodate some blue eyed people.
After Ghaffar’s name was removed and he was declared dead all the hopes about him getting a house under PMAY were dashed. But he has not given up and is still fighting to get justice.
“These people have declared my husband dead for some money. Maybe these people will even delete our ration cards, maybe they will even withhold our pension. These people are very cruel, “said Ghaffar’s wife Sharifa Begum. “At this stage of life we have no power, no money to run from offices to offices for justice.”
A local resident Bashir Ahmed, said, “It is an act to acknowledge oneself as dead in order to escape oppression, and this act is not applicable to anyone except the poor and oppressed.”
The locals alleged names of many deserving people like Abdul Ghaffar were deleted from the list of PMAY beneficiaries. “Our own people Panchayat representatives in nexus with the RDD officials have deprived the deserving of their right.”
“Irony is that after deleting the names they declared living and healthy persons as dead. It’s unfortunate that investigating agencies, the district administration and the so-called social workers despite knowing everything have remained silent over the issue,” locals said.
According to sources, the names of more than five alive persons in the said panchayat have been deleted and they have been declared dead, most of them are physically disabled. “No one was able to provide satisfactory information when an attempt was made to contact the employees of the Rural Development Department posted in the said panchayat to find out the reasons for declaring alive people dead” the locals said.
Despite repeated attempts to call Assistant Commissioner Doda and Block Development Officer Doda, both the officials could not be contacted.
