Mahajans, Khatris dumped by the party which they built; silence of BJP leaders annoys community members
Deprived of buying or selling agricultural land
9/8/2021 11:21:22 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 8: Members of Mahajan and Khatri communities, who helped Bharatiya Janata Party, to win 25 out of 37 assembly seats in Jammu region in 2014 assembly elections in J&K have been left to fend on their own by the leaders, whom they had voted for.
The present dispensation is enforcing a rigid land law which had been dumped by all the previous regimes. The law prevents Mahajans, Khatris and Sikhs to buy or sell the agricultural land. Members of these communities have been running from pillar to post to get this “discriminatory” law amended but no one is paying any heed towards their pleas.
“Mahajan and Khatris have played a major role in BJP’s emergence in Jammu region and have supported the party in every possible way. It’s unfortunate that the communities that helped BJP to defeat the other parties are facing discrimination,” said a member of a Mahajan community.
He said, “Whenever we approach the leaders whom we have voted for they tell us that they are not a part of the government and all the affairs are being managed by the bureaucrats. The party which had promised to become our voice has turned into a mute spectator. We had expected a better deal,” he said.
“The law restricting Mahajans, Khatris and Sikhs on purchasing agricultural land has been drafted and imposed without giving it a thought. Its implementation is unconstitutional and it also violates fundamental rights of the communities deprived of purchasing agricultural land,” said a politician.
“It is hard to understand why Section 133-H has been incorporated in the Land Revenue Act. What is more baffling is the silence of the local BJP leadership over the issue. Inclusion of Section 133-H seems to be a conspiracy of some bureaucrats, who had ulterior motives but acting like a mute spectator over the issue by the BJP leadership has created doubts among Jammuites.
BJP’s dubious stand has led to growing resentment among the affected communities,” the politician added.
A member of a Khatri community said, “Prior to August 5, 2019, there were no restrictions in buying or selling the agricultural land, even the Kashmir centric leaders never interfered in our matters, but the present government which is backed by the party (BJP) which we supported has turned us into second grade citizens by depriving of our rights.”
