Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 22: Despite awareness campaigns and advisories being issued from time to time by the Jammu Police, the cases of cyber crime and frauds have increased manifold in the district.
A senior police official said with increasing use of the internet, the cases of cyber crime are also continuously rising.
"The cases of cyber crime have increased too much. Despite awareness campaigns, people are falling prey to cyber frauds," said the officer.
He asserted that people are becoming victims of fraud and they are not even aware of it, adding, "it is only after the money is withdrawn from their bank accounts through online frauds, they get to know that they have been trapped and looted."
"In Jammu division, there has been an increase of about 35 percent of cyber crime cases," said the officer that those who have been victimized, easily share the PIN of the ATM card to the callers and get trapped.
"Cyber fraudsters keep changing their strategy and now they have started sharing text messages on cell phones, which can easily lay a trap," he disclosed.
"Police, bank authorities and even the concerned government agencies are aware of these frauds but despite that they fall prey to the masterminds," said the officer.
In the year 2019, he said 43 cases were solved and 135 are under investigation and in 2020, 61 cases were solved and 201 are under investigation.
Cyber fraud can be prevented by not falling for any kind of offers, not to get befooled on cell phone by an unknown person, money can be deposited or transferred only after verifying the facts, by having complex passwords of social media accounts, apps and one important thing is that the bank employees never ask for details over the phone, he advised.
