Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 28: Carving a niche in the world of art, Deepa Soni, renowned painter of Jammu and Kashmir, has been showcasing her work at various events across the Union Territory and has won accolades for it.
Her trademark has been ethnic culture of Jammu and Kashmir, which is visible in her works. She has displayed her talent on canvas. Her paintings revolve around designs and portraits on different aspects of the ethnic culture and life.
Deepa Soni didn’t take formal training in painting and considers herself, a self-taught artist, “I was inclined towards painting from my childhood and my parents supported me in every possible way,” she says.
“Although I had great passion for painting since my childhood but when I was in a school, I got art teacher who really helped me a lot to excel in this field.
He encouraged me and taught me some nuances of this art. I got support from my parents and it helped me in shaping my career as an artist,” she says.
Referring to Basohli painting, she says, “Basohli painting is a craft, which has to be learnt. It needs lot of patience and dedication. I learnt it from my art teacher in the school. “
“I always focus on expressions in my paintings. I love to paint with oil, water colour, acrylics etc. Since I am from Jammu and a Dogra, I am making an effort to showcase Dogra culture through my paintings.
Apart from Dogra culture, I have also shown Kashmiri and Ladakhi culture through my paintings,” she adds. “I never think about any particular subject before making a painting. It comes from my heart to the canvas,” says Soni.
About the ongoing painting exhibition, Soni says, “The entire work on display in this exhibition has been completed during COVID period as I thought this was the best time to focus entirely on my passion.”
“Painting is very good and lucrative career but one has to work very hard to become an expert in it. Budding artists should follow this career passionately.”
