KVK Leh to work with NBAGR for breed conservation | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
LEH, Oct 12: In a major development having far reaching effects towards conservation of local animal germplasm in the cold arid Ladakh region of the country, the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, NBAGR Karnal will work with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Leh to identify and conserve the local breeds of the region. In this context, a five members delegation headed by Dr BP Mishra, Head NBAGR Karnal and comprised of Dr FD Sheikh Sr. Scientist and Head at KVK-Leh carried out an extensive tour to various places and to some remote locations in Leh and Changthang region of the Union Territory of Ladakh. Giving details, Dr FD Sheikh said that the team went as a part of the national mission to identify Zero Non-Descriptive Breeds of the country starting from Cold arid Ladakh. The team will characterize and register local sheep Malluk, Local Goat Malra, Purig sheep and Changkhi Dog as breed of the country in days to come. This will help in conservation of local Ladakhi germplasm of the valuable livestock of this region thereby preventing it from further deterioration and extinction. The team during their visit also took morphometric data from more than 50 Changkhi dogs, 60 Malra goats and 50 Malluk sheep as a part of first phase of this national initiative. The team after completing their tour also met the Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, LAHDC Leh and Commissioner Secretary Agriculture and Animal Sciences UT of Ladakh. CEC was very much impressed with their work and assured them of full support. The Commissioner Secretary also formed an internal committee with members from NBAGR, KVK Leh and District Animal Husbandry Department. |
