EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Oct 24: Social activist Gurmeet Singh Baaghi demanded compensation for farmers whose crops, fruits and vegetables damaged due to heavy rains/hailstorms and snow in J&K.
In a statement, Baaghi said that recent rains/hailstorms and snow have damaged the standing crops, fruits, trees and vegetables and the government must depute teams to assess the losses immediately and apparently compensate the affecting farmers, so that they can overcome the financial losses they suffered.
He also expressed grave concern over the loss of farmers’ and other public property at several places due to the incessant rains/ hailstorm and snow.
These incidents of crops, fruits and vegetables damage should be treated as natural calamities, he demanded.
Farmers were already leading their life from hand to mouth due to present situations raised by the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic and now rains, hailstorm and snow ruined their fruits, crops and vegetables. They are now in very difficult situation and bound to seek help from the administration.
He demanded that the government should waive off farmers’ loans and electricity charges as the farmers are not in a position to pay the installments of the loan or electricity charges. He further urged the government to bring in comprehensive insurance schemes for the farmers where the produce of the farmers is fully covered in case of such natural calamities.
Baaghi also expressed deep grief over the demise of three family members of nomads whose makeshift tents got buried under the soil debris at Noorpora, Tral Srinagar Kashmir due to incessant rains and demanded that the administration must provide adequate ex-gratia to the family members at an earliest.
