JK Govt busy with festivities as Poonch battlefield continues to ‘heat up’ | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 27: Amid a gunbattle continuing for a over a fortnight in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, the J&K Government is busy festivities in Kashmir. While the people especially those from Jammu are worried about the “emerging situation” in the border district, the administration is busy with a Sufi festival being held in Srinagar. As per an official handout the Sufi musical festival was organized by the J&K Tourism department on October 27 to celebrate Iconic Week as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. “Jammu & Kashmir is blessed with rich cultural heritage, literature, and wisdom of Rishis and Sufis and the legacy needs to be shared with the world. It is home to values of communal harmony and unity in diversity, spreading the message of peace and love,” an official handout said. As per the handout the “The musical evening brought together the gems and renowned artists of the Sufi tradition, from across the country, in Kashmir, including Ms. Vidha Lal, a famous Kathak Exponent, and Ms. Vusat Iqbal Khan, a Dastango, telling the tales of the mystics and literary legends through their performances.” As per reports, “Terrorists from a sleeper cell are likely to be taking part in an encounter in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir.” Nine soldiers have been killed over the last two weeks in what has turned into one of the longest encounters the country has seen. On October 11, five soldiers were killed in action in Dera Ki Gali in Poonch. Three days later, another four soldiers were killed in action in Mendhar. Sources say that the terrorists involved are part of a “sleeper cell” that has been dormant in the valley for years. The cell has been activated now, at a time when the number of terror attacks has dropped in the Kashmir Valley. The site of the encounter is 20 km from the Line of Control leading Army sources to believe that the encounter is not the result of a recent infiltration. Sources in the security forces have indicated that this has been one of the longest and toughest operations. The thick forests have made drone operations difficult and spotting terrorists from helicopters has not worked out. |
