Unfair Decision
11/1/2021 10:53:44 PM

The private company which has bagged the contract for providing security to J&K Bank ATMs across the Union Territory has slashed the salaries of the guards working for the past 10-years. The decision is unacceptable. If the company has really decided to cut the salaries of these people then it needs to revisit its decision and reverse it.
The ATM guards staged protests in Jammu and Srinagar on Monday against the company’s decision. They are poor people whose salaries range between Rs 7000/ to Rs 10000/. Slashing their salaries amidst inflation is a very hard decision. If the company that has bagged the contract to provide security guards believes that it has taken the contract at a lower rate, then it should back out. But if it has been provided with a good rate then it needs to ensure that the guards don’t suffer.
These ATM guards work 24x7 to ensure that people don’t face any difficulty and the cash dispensing machines remain safe. It’s unfortunate that the labour class has been targeted.
The company is aware of the fact that the guards fall in the category of unskilled workforce and after making little noise they will fall in line. But someone needs to tell the corporate house is it fair to hit the workforce on whom it depends to run its business?
As it is, these people are given peanuts in the name of salary. Slashing it further is being too unfair. The J&K Bank management needs to intervene rather than staying away from the matter as the job of guarding the ATMs has been outsourced. The company needs to realize that employees are provided with the increments after every year and this process is common across the country. Slashing the salaries of the employees who have worked for many years is unheard off.
The ATM guards, who staged protests in Srinagar and Jammu, had tears in their eyes as they admitted that they cannot even boycott the work as they have got families to feed. The higher-ups need to take cognizance.
They need to speak to the company which has hired them, as one thing is for sure that it’s impossible to feed a family with mere Rs 5000/. This is injustice and needs to be corrected.
