Wakeup Call | | | Disturbing figures have come to fore. Six lakh people in Jammu and Kashmir are addicted to drugs and their number is swelling. The issue of drug addiction was discussed threadbare during the maiden meeting of the state-level committee of the narco coordination centre. During the meeting it came to fore that 90% drug abusers fall in the age group of 17-33 years. The younger generation taking refuge in drugs is a cause of concern for one and all. It indicates that as a society we have failed and it’s a collective failure. Youngsters linked to the drug trade are more victims than offenders. The drug peddlers who sell this poison need to be reined in and given exemplary punishment. It is unfortunate that parents and elders are not paying attention to what their children are up to and where they are heading towards. It’s the duty of elders to keep a vigil on the youngsters. They can’t just be careless towards them. Elders have to ensure that youngsters don’t go astray. Callousness towards children is a regrettable feature of society. This needs to be taken care of. A collaborative effort on the part of every stakeholder is imperative to check the menace and every individual, and various social organizations need to join hands together to end the menace. The religious preachers can play a vital role and create awareness among the people about what they need to do to check this menace. Jammu and Kashmir is situated in close vicinity to the golden crescent which produces 80 percent of the world’s opium and is considered as the prime source of the illicit drug trade. The law enforcing agencies need to put their act together and work towards putting brakes on this trade. Other steps that can be taken to control this menace could be enhancing the conviction rate in narco-related cases while simultaneously focusing on proper counselling and rehabilitation of drug-affected youth. The J&K is in the grip of narco-terrorism as the international drug mafia is smuggling drugs through the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) to sell a small portion in this region and the remaining consignment in the neighbouring Punjab. J&K turning into a transit point for drugs is also emerging as a challenge but the security forces and other agencies are trying their best to get these smugglers and many have been caught till date. But society has got a vital role to play to curb this menace.
