Col Mahan vows support to farmers against ‘unjustified’ anti-encroachment drive
11/30/2021 10:48:45 PM
Early Times Report

KATHUA, Nov 30: DDC Chairman Col Mahan Singh (Retd.) on Tuesday led hundreds of farmers to the DC Office and submitted a memorandum seeking insulation for the tiller community in the ongoing anti-encroachment drive initiated by Kathua Administration terming the same to be arbitrary and unjustified.
Others who accompanied Col Mahan include DDC members Karan Atri, Dr Shaveta Singh and Sushma Devi, Gopal Mahajan, BJP District President, Rajesh Mehta, Sarpanch Sunita, Inderjit Sharma and Mohd Sharif.
Earlier people from Kathua, Hiranagar, Basohli and Billawar besides senior BJP leaders of the District approached DDC Chairman Col Mahan Singh (Retd.) and apprised him about anti-encroachment drive being run by Kathua Administration whereby people are issued notices to vacate land chunks held by them for last 30 to 70 years. They told the DDC Chairman that their livelihood depends on these small chunks of land as they have paid taxes for the same and governments in the past have entered their names in Girdwaris and other revenue records but now the administration is hell-bent to snatch away their only source of livelihood. After going through the plight of farmers, the DDC Chairman assured that he will take care of the issue and no poor soul would be harassed over the issue. He vowed to take up the matter with concerned quarters in the government. Following this, a memorandum addressed to LG Manoj Sinha was prepared and consequently submitted to DC Kathua Rahul Yadav to forward the same to LG Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.
Col Mahan Singh (Retd.) put forth people’s point and asked the DC to ensure the poor farmers are not harassed.
It is pertinent to mention that there are large numbers of poor people/farmers who are cultivating the State lands in District Kathua for decades and they have paid levy to the then governments for the use of the above said land and the then government has entered the mutation/Girdawari of these people/farmers in the revenue records. Now the Kathua Administration has started the anti-encroachment drive against these people/farmers which is unjustified.
Col Mahan said that by snatching land chunks from these farmers the government will snatch livelihood of people which should not be the case as the government is a welfare state and it should provide succor to people and not take away the source of their livelihood.
The DDC Chairman also said that West Pakistani Refugees who are living here since 1947, and the government has allotted the lands to these people, also the GoI has given them the rights and also allotted the Domicile Certificates, are also forcibly asked by the revenue officials to vacate their lands.
The DDC Chairman has appealed to LG Sinha to intervene and ask the revenue officials/Kathua Administration not to interfere in the peaceful possession of land of the poor people/farmers, especially when the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has committed to uplift the tillers and poor people across the country.
