CME on “ERRORS OF MEDICATION” organised

Jammu, Dec 1: A Lecture-cum-CME on “ERRORS OF MEDICATION” was organized by the Department of Pharmacology and Department of Paediatrics in Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences & Hospital in the College Auditorium.
Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Prof & Head, Department of Radiation Oncology, Govt. Medical College, Jammu was the Chief Guest. Dr. Pavan Malhotra, Director Principal/Professor of Pharmacology spoke on the Errors of Medication, its types and causes.
While discussing on the topic, Dr. Malhotra laid stress on availability of lookalike and sound alike drugs which either resemble in name or resemble in packages but the drug belong to different groups. He gave a detailed implication of errors due to lookalike drug. While discussing the topic he addressed the young budding doctors to lay stress on the drug profile of each and every drug before prescribing it. Dr. Malhotra quoted Sir William Osler, who stated that “A good physician is the one who treats the disease, while as the great physician is that who treats the patients who has the disease”. Dr. Vishal Tandon, Professor of Pharmacology, chaired the session.
In the second session, Dr. Ravinder K. Gupta, Prof & Head, Department of Paediatrics, ASCOMS & H gave a detailed account of how to prevent the medication errors in the daily practice. Dr. Gupta while discussing the topic informed the audience that the need of the hour is to find ways and means to reduce the medication errors so the patients have not to suffer.
He also advocated that the complaint of lookalike sound alike drug should be seriously taken up by the Govt. of India so that confusing presentation of drugs do not adversely affect the health of the patients. Dr. G.S. Saini, Prof & Head, Department of Paediatrics, GMC, Jammu chaired the session and elaborated on the daily difficulties being faced by all the physicians especially paediatricians on the errors of medication. Dr. Saini was of the opinion that novel methods like barcode scan should be put to use to minimize the errors.
The CME was attended by doctors from various institutes namely Dr. Sarabjeet Singh, Principal IDS, Sehora, Dr. Sanjeev Digra, Dr. Ashu Jamwal, Dr. Razzak, Dr. Sunil Dutt Sharma from department of Paediatrics, GMC, Jammu. Among others present were Dr. N.K.Pargal, Dr. Sapna Gupta, Dr. Bhavneet Kour, Dr. Anil K. Gupta, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Gupta, Dr. Nandita Mehta, Dr. Sapna Puri and other faculty members from ASCOMS, along with residents, MBBS and Nursing students from various institutes attended the same. Dr. Ashutosh Gupta felicitated the speakers while as the Chairmen were felicitated by Dr. Anil K. Gupta. Dr. Ritika and Dr. Saiste managed the proceedings.
