Implement Minimum Wages Act
12/12/2021 11:12:58 PM
Jammu and Kashmir Government not implementing the Minimum Wages Act has made life difficult for more than 60,000 need base workers, daily wagers and casual labourers.
These workers get a meager Rs 225 per day, while as according to the Minimum Wages Act they should get Rs 600 per day. The Act has not been implemented in J&K till date and it appears that the helmsmen are not even thinking about it.
Discrimination with the need based labourers has been going on for the past many decades. The erstwhile political regimes to appease their workers used to employ them as daily wagers with a promise that they would be regularized after a few years. Only some lucky one used to get regularized. Maximum of these daily wagers have been working on meager wages for the past many years and have lost hope that they would be regularized at any point of time in near future.
The government needs to think about them and the least it can do is that it can implement the Minimum Wages Act so that it could help these poor labourers manage two square meals in a day.
Many State and UT governments have implemented Minimum Wage Act. Recently, National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi revised the minimum wages rates in scheduled employment under the Minimum Wages Act 1948.
As per the notification, the non- matriculates workers are paid a minimum Rs 675/- per day. Workers with above Matric qualification are paid Rs 752/- per day while as graduates are paid Rs 807/- per day. But no such proposal has been moved by the J&K Government till date. Everyday announcements are made about creating new employment avenues for the unemployed youth and raising the standard of living of the people. But these claims remain confined to mere announcements only. Before new avenues are created the helmsmen should pay some attention towards the people who have been living miserable lives for the past many years. The injustice with these needs based, casual labourers and daily wagers should end. They deserve to at least earn that much through which they can feed their families and manage their daily expenses. The implementation of the Minimum Wages Act will help thousands of families. It needs to be given a thought.
