Address Aspirations

Voices to struggle for restoration of the snatched rights of J&K people are becoming shriller. Former J&K chief ministers Dr Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti—during the past few days have addressed many rallies. They have been constantly talking about how the J&K people have been disempowered after August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to scrap J&K’s special status and divided it into two union territories.
Recently PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti called on the youth to join the struggle for restoration of their rights “snatched” by the Centre and said non-violence, not “stones or guns”, was the way ahead. She said the people of Jammu are now realising the fallout of the decision as their land and jobs are going to outsiders.
The Article 370 was revoked with a promise that J&K people will be given equal opportunities and new avenues will be thrown open for them. But after the scrapping of J&K’s special status natives have been ignored and outsiders are being preferred. Jammu region has been the worst hit as the helmsmen have taken many such decisions in the past that have gone against the people. The decisions like scrapping Darbar Move practice, awarding mining contracts to outsiders, allotting lands to big outside firms for industrial purposes and keeping the locals away from big projects has disappointed the people of Jammu.
When Article 370 was scrapped people in Jammu region had endorsed the Centre’s decision with a hope that the discrimination they have faced for the past 70-years will end and they would get their due share. But the decisions that have been taken after August 5, 2019 have been contrary to their expectations. On many occasions people have claimed that they were better off when Article 370 was in vogue. At least they had a say and were taken on board before any major decisions were announced.
The helmsmen should realize that they cannot keep people away from the decision making process forever. Once the elected government is formed in J&K it may have to reverse many such decisions that have been taken during the past two and half years. People are hoping that the Delimitation Panel would submit its report soon and they would be able to elect their representatives so that they can be reached whenever needed.
