Only court can decide SIT probe: IGP
12/31/2021 9:25:17 PM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Dec 31: Amid widespread criticism over the Hyderpora gun battle in which two civilians were killed, a senior Jammu and Kashmir Police officer on Friday advised politicians not to incite people on the issue.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar said the Court is the only authority to decide on the Special Investigation Team report. "In a democratic set up, politicians, family members and the media can say to the court that they are not satisfied with the investigations and can demand a probe by a higher agency. But they have no right to term the police probe as false," Kumar told a press conference.
He said only the court has the authority to decide whether SIT probe into the Hyderpora encounter was flawed.
"I request and advise politicians not to instigate the public. Let the court decide and they will scrutinize every document of ours and advice accordingly to go for further investigation," Kumar said.
A section of politicians and the media have hit out at the Hyrderpora probe. Former Chief Minister Farooq Abdulla called the report "false".
SIT head Sujit Kumar, a Deputy Inspector General of central Kashmir, had said that the building owner Altaf Bhat was used as a human shield by foreign terrorists and was killed in crossfire. He said Dr Mudasir Gul was killed by the Pakistani terrorist in the attic of the building.
After criticism, the police warned politicians of penal action. Vijay Kumar said some politicians were "legitimating terrorism".
"We have killed dreaded terrorists who were involved in series of civilian killings. Some political leaders are legitimating terrorism. What is the need to question the encounter in which dreaded terrorists were killed and taking their photos to Jantar Mantar? Is it wrong to kill dreaded terrorists," he asked.
