Chaos at Srinagar Airport as admin ‘invites tourists, forgets facilities’
1/5/2022 11:29:00 PM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 5: Chaos was witnessed on the Srinagar airport for the second consecutive day on Wednesday as the passengers, especially tourists, who were scheduled for fly out had to face tough time in reaching the terminal only to return empty handed.
Even as around-fifty flights got cancelled at the Srinagar airport in the last two days, for the visitors who had to return without taking the flight, it was an alleged chaos in reaching the airport and then going back.
“It took us three hours to reach the Airport and there it was a scene like that of a bus stand but no proper information about the status of the flights,” said a tourist from New Delhi.
He said it was unfortunate that the administration couldn’t make timely announcement about the status of flights through electronic media and internet to prevent them from unwanted travel to the airport. The tourists said they have been left to fend for themselves. “The hotels in Kashmir charge exorbitantly and there’s no procedure to get hotel room at genuine price. Now what are we supposed to do? This is shame on the part of the administration,” the tourists said.
One of the stranded tourists said there was no proper disposal information or helpline for them. “Nobody responds on the helplines with clarity. If the government is unable to manage administrative affairs even for the tourists, why do they invite us in the first instance,” said another aggrieved passenger.
Its pertinent to mention that former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has already taken a dig at the administration. In a tweet he said: Our “international airport” has no landing aids that enable runway to remain open when visibility dips. We make such a big deal about tourism &investment promotion now imagine the plight of those tourists who’ve sat all day outside the terminal &watched their flights get cancelled.”
“Not to mention the locals who will have their tickets cancelled & be told to buy fresh ones with fares that touch the stratosphere. Travel in to & out from the valley in winter is not a pleasant experience,” he added. A senior official said the weather advisory was already there and that the administration was busy offering adequate services to the people.
