Weather improves in Kashmir, Gulmarg minus 10 deg after snowfall in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Jan 9: Weather improved in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh after days of moderate to heavy snowfall and rains even as night temperature recorded a drop with mercury settling at minus 10.0 degree Celsius at famous ski resort of Gulmarg on Sunday.
A Meteorological Department official said as expected weather improved significantly in J&K and Ladakh. Currently the weather is cloudy in J&K and generally in Ladakh, he said and added "Except light rain/snow may occur at scattered places of J&K, especially over eastern parts during the next 24 to 48 hours".
He said thereafter, the weather is likely to remain dry till January 16.
He said there will be gradual rise in day temperature and fall in minimum (night) temperature onwards.
The weatherman has also advised people living near snow bound areas to take precautions as the threat of snow avalanche still exists.
He said Srinagar, with snowfall of 4.2cms in the last 24 hours till 0830 hours today, recorded a low of 0.3 degree Celsius against previous night's 0.2 degree Celsius. It was 2.1 degree Celsius above normal for this time of the season, he said.
Gulmarg, having 15cms of fresh snowfall during the time, recorded plunge in temperature as mercury settled at minus 10.0 degree Celsius against minus 4.6 degree Celsius on the previous night.
Qazigund with 14cms of snow in the last 24 hours recorded a low of minus 0.4 degree Celsius against sub zero degree Celsius on the previous night he said.
Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir had 16.8cms of snowfall during the time and recorded a low of minus 1.8 degree Celsius against minus 0.2 degree Celsius on previous night, he said.
Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, had 12cms of snow during the time and recorded a low of minus 2.3 degree Celsius against minus 0.9 degree celsius on previous night, the official said.
Kupwara town in north Kashmir, had 4.1cms of fresh snowfall during the time and recorded a minimum of minus 0.6 degree Celsius against 0.0 degree Celsius as on the previous night, the official said.
Ladakh's Leh recorded a low of minus 8.2 degree Celsius against last night's 9.7 degree Celsius while mercury at the automatic station in Kargil settled at minus 7.0 degree Celsius and minus7.3 degree Celsius at Drass, the official said.
