Kashmir valley, Ladakh reel under cold, Drass at -24.2

Srinagar, Jan 11: Drass in Ladakh experienced the seasons coldest night with temperature of minus 24.2 degree Celsius, while the famous tourist resorts of Gulmarg recorded a low temperature of minus 10.6 degree Celsius and Pahalgam minus 10.4 degree Celsius in Kashmir on Tuesday. A Meteorological Department official said that Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir settled at 0.2 degree Celsius for the second consecutive day on Tuesday. It was 2.0 degrees above normal during this time of the season, he said. The famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir showed a further dip in temperature and was recorded at minus 10.6 degree Celsius against minus 10.0 degree Celsius recorded on Monday which is minus 2.7 degree below normal during this period of the season. Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir recorded temperatures of minus 10.4 degree Celsius against the minus 2.6 degree Celsius on the previous night, he said.
Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway recorded a low temperature of minus 0.6 degree Celsius against the 0.6 degree Celsius recorded on the previous night, he said. Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, settled at minus 1.7 degree Celsius for the second consecutive day on Tuesday. Leh in Ladakh recorded temperatures of minus 12.6 degree Celsius against minus 9.5 degree Celsius the previous day while mercury at the automatic station in Kargil settled at minus 11.3 degree Celsius against the 7.0 degree Celsius recorded a day ago while, Drass the world’s second coldest place after Siberia recorded temperatures of minus 24.2 degree Celsius against minus 8.8 degree Celsius, the official said.
