Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 31: Even when the figures pertaining to the area of Jammu as well as Kashmir valley are becoming public, there are wide-scale apprehensions amongst the public circles about whether Jammu will be accorded its rightful due this time.
Post bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019, and subsequent creation of Ladakh as a separate union territory, the area of Kashmir valley is 15,520.3 km2 (5,992.4 sq mi). However, the total area of Jammu division is 26,293 km2 (10,152 sq mi). It means the area is 10773 sq kms more than Kashmir valley.
Now the question arises that in the recent delimitation process why the power balance is still tilted towards Kashmir valley while Jammu has been asked to remain contended with mere addition of six years making the total sum as 43 assembly constituencies. However, even when Kashmir has 10773 sq kms less than Jammu, its assembly segments will have 47 seats as per the delimitation commission proposal.
Also, the discrimination being meted out to Jammu over scores of centrally sponsored schemes is an open secret. “ We have seen discrimination everywhere.
The Rs 3,000 crore project executed by NRSS XXIX Transmission Limited, the PSV of Sterlite Power, included commissioning of three 400 kV Double Circuit transmission lines and one 400/220 kV GIS Substation to deliver over 1,000 MW of electricity from Punjab to the Kashmir Valley by strengthening the National Grid.
However, in Jammu, the power dearth was ought to remain as it was and no additional supplies were made for the region. It remains a mystery why those who claim to be representing the aspirations of Jammu have maintained a stoic silence over such discrimination being done that too openly,” says a netizen while commenting over the issue.
He added that the government despite providing less electricity to Jammu has got more revenue from the region.
Details inform that during the financial year of 2015-16, Kashmir paid a whooping Rs.237 crores less than Jammu. As Kashmir paid 837.17 crore rupees as electricity dues against 8142 MUs of power, Jammu paid a whooping 1074 Crore rupees against a mere 6138 MUs of electricity.
Jammu paid Rs 346 Cr. more than Kashmir Valley. As Kashmir paid 283.66 Cr rupees against 5161 MUs of electricity, Jammu paid 629.21 Cr rupees for using 522 MUs less than Kashmir is 4639 MUs.”
