Jamwal demands strict action to curb acid attacks | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 6: Expressing concern over the increasing incidents of acid attacks, particularly in Kashmir, social and political activist Puneet Jamwal called for exemplary punishment to curb this menace. Intensive awareness campaigns should be conducted to make the victims of such incidents and their families aware of legal aid and other schemes for them and bring them back to the mainstream,” Jamwal said. He added that law enforcement agencies should also play a major role by curbing illegal sale of acid, he said. “Most of the victims of acid attacks are women. They suffer physically, mentally and are alienated from the mainstream of the society. Civil society must come forward to rehabilitate such victims,” Jamwal said. He further said that punishment in acid attack cases should be exemplary to curb such heinous offences. He said that recent acid attack in Srinagar is the worst example of violence against women. There is no place for any such action in any civilized society. We stand by the victim in this hour of pain and hope all the necessary steps are taken by the authorities to provide justice to her,” Jamwal said. Earlier, on February 1 a 24-year-old woman suffered serious injuries in an acid attack in Srinagar. The survivor was working at a local business unit in Srinagar. She was attacked while returning home from work. Jammu and Kashmir police arrested three accused and sealed a shop for illegal sale of acid. |
