They want jobs, not loans
2/16/2022 12:07:55 AM

Unemployed dental surgeons are in the news again. On Monday they were beaten by the police for staging a protest to seek employment.
The dental surgeons out rightly rejected the new scheme announced by the government which provides them with grant-in-aid of Rs 2 lakhs and loan of Rs 6 lakhs to set up a dental clinic having two doctors and two assistants.
Since 2008, no posts for dental surgeons have been announced in J&K. They are demanding jobs and not loans. They had assembled at Tawi Bridge in Jammu to drive home a point that they don’t agree with the new policy announced by the government for them. Instead of listening to them they were beaten, humiliated and arrested.
Soon after the “employment policy” of providing loans to the dental surgeons under Mission Youth was announced by the J&K Government these professionals told the media that no suggestions were taken from them and the policy was announced without taking anyone on board. They had castigated the bureaucrats sitting in the big offices for coming up with a proposal that will have no takers.
It takes five years to complete a BDS degree and it’s an expensive course. There is a dearth of dental surgeons in the government hospitals. Despite an army of BDS doctors sitting idle the government is making no attempt to make them a part of the system.
The Rs 8 lakh package offered jointly to the dental surgeons has many flaws. If one wants to buy a shop in Jammu city it costs around Rs 40 to Rs 50 lakhs, and even if it’s taken on rent it costs a fortune. Setting up a dental clinic is an expensive affair and everyone can’t afford it.
While rejecting the Rs 2 lakh grant-in-aid and Rs 6 lakh loan offer these professionals had made a humble request that they should be provided with jobs. Most of these unemployed professionals were of the opinion that they won’t be able to manage the expenses and pay interest on the bank loan. They are raising a genuine point and they should be heard. Instead of giving them a patient hearing they are being beaten.
It seems that the J & K Government has failed to generate employment for the youth and it’s now trying to hide behind the excuses. They don’t want lollipops, they need jobs and don’t deserve to be humiliated on the streets.
