Erratic power supply irks Kashmir, admin blames tower collapse
2/28/2022 11:29:21 PM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Feb 28: Erratic power supply has been irking the power consumers in Kashmir with politicians taking a dig at the “poor deliverance of basic amenities” in the Union Territory.
The power consumers said since the recent snowfall, which took place around a week ago, there was no proper schedule of power and that the electricity remains off for most part of the day.
The residents of the summer capital of Srinagar said the power remains off for almost twelve hours in a day adding that no power curtailment schedule was being adhered to.
With this being the scene in the city, the plight elsewhere in Kashmir can only be imagined. Some of the politicians have been up in arms against the “dark days in Kashmir.”
“72 hours and counting, Kulgam continues be without electricity. No warmth, no light, no water now at many places. People managing the show have no one else to blame but themselves. This is what this inept and clueless dministration has achieved,” senior National Conference leader Imran Nabi Dar had recently posted on the social media.
The residents of rural areas said even as there was no electricity for around three days after the recent snowfall, “the restoration of power wasn’t any welcome move.”
“The restoration of power has been a symbolic gesture as we hardly get any electricity,” said a resident of south Kashmir.
Sources said the power supplies had been improved in the last few years but that the power department was witnessing some “administrative issues for the last few months.”
“All of a sudden, the Power department is not able to perform as per the expectations of the Modi government which wants to give better civic amenities in the form of bijli, sadal and paani to the people. The issue should be probed,” said a Power department official on the condition of anonymity.
When contacted a senior official downplayed the issue of erratic power saying that some of the power transmission towers had collapsed and thus the restoration of affected transmission lines was the main reason behind the power outages. He said the normal power supplies were (against PDD being restored on priority.
