‘Grand Old Party’ losing ground
3/15/2022 12:14:28 AM

The Grand Old Party of India, Congress, facing humiliating defeat in the recently held elections in five states had once again led to the interim Congress chief Sonia Gandhi offering to step down, but her loyalists once again reposed faith in her leadership and took a pledge to restore the pristine glory of the party.
The Congress failed to make any impact in the recently held assembly elections. Out of five states four were won by the BJP and one by AAP.
The rebel group within the Congress Party led by veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad was sidelined by the party high command after it demanded a revamp in the party structure after the debacle of the Congress in 2019 parliamentary elections.
The recent loss has provided the rebel group with more ammunition to corner the party high command but possibilities about Gandhi family handing over the control to a non-Gandhi look bleak. It’s an open secret that Sonia Gandhi is just acting as a rubber stamp and it’s her son Rahul Gandhi who is managing the show. But not many people are impressed by his leadership skills.
For Congress options are limited as the 2024 is not that far away, if it keeps on losing ground the party may end up in a big mess in the general elections that are just two years away. If the same trend continues the Congress may end up turning into a regional party.
After the recent meeting of the Congress Working Committee one thing is clear that Gandhis will keep on leading the party. The senior leaders, who have turned rebels, hardly matter as no one wants to listen to them.
If the Congress wants to make a comeback it will have to do something extraordinary to garner support of the common people. But the way things are shaping up it seems that the party leaders are unable to strike a chord with a common man. The party has got nothing to offer to the common people.
In Jammu also the Congress Party has failed to play a role of an opposition. It has not been able to raise the issues which are touching the skin of a common man in Jammu region. The “Grand Old Party” of India is slowly turning into history.
