Boy’s sudden death in a half marathon puts question mark on performance of Sports Department | ET asks 6 questions that merit answer from LG Administration without delay | | Early Time Report
Jammu, Mar 30: A young boy who wasn’t even 20 years of age died on Wednesday as he collapsed while taking part in the half marathon run in South Kashmir. Such an unfortunate incident has once again exposed the administration that has failed to take pre-emptive measures during such crucial events. Reports inform that a half marathon race was scheduled on Wednesday in Shadimarg zone and four other zones in the district and accordingly every school in the area was informed to send five students. The event was conducted by the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports. Reports quoting an official have said that Higher Secondary School Rajpora had also sent five students and while the race was started today morning, the boy fell unconscious just after a few meters. It was informed further that the boy was immediately shifted to PHC Rajpora wherefrom he was referred to district hospital Pulwama. However, he has been declared brought dead there. The deceased student was identified as Shahnawaz Ahmed Mir, son of Ghulam Muhammad Mir of Chandpora Rajpora. It later came to the fore that the boy in question had a heart ailment. However, evading responsibility, the authorities have passed the buck on the poor and aggrieved parents of that boy- stating that they shouldn’t have allowed the boy to take part in such a marathon. However, there are few questions that merit an immediate answer from the authorities. 1. In every school and higher secondary, there is a separate physical education department with teachers qualified in the field of physical education. They impart training to the students and train them ahead of making them take part of any district, state, or national level sports event. Was the boy trained by the Physical Education department of that higher secondary ahead of the event? 2. Was the mock run as per the procedure conducted by the Higher secondary? 3. What procedure was adopted ahead of selecting the boy for the half marathon? 4. Was any medical history of the boy acquired before sending him to the run? 5. During the marathon, was the medical team available on the spot? 6. Was there any emergency medical aid or CPR given at the time when the boy collapsed? Meanwhile, on social media also, there has been a lot of disgruntlement over the sad incident with questions being raised over the lack of preparedness in organizing such marathons in Jammu and Kashmir. The departments, said the netizens, are racing against each other to impress the LG administration. However, in such a mad rush, the smart alecks forget the dos and the don’t-s There are demands for an inquiry into the incident so that if there has been any lapse, the same could be addressed and erring officials put to task. |
