Patient on ‘death bed’, ‘adamant’ doctor not ready to provide treatment | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 31: In yet another instance of carelessness by the doctors at Government Medical College & Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu, a patient who was admitted on March 27 is still waiting for his treatment to begin. Narrating their tale of woes, the family members and friends of the patient, who hails from Sarore area in Bishnah, said that the patient had consumed some poisonous substance out of frustration on March 27 as there was some petty issue in the family. “As soon as the family knew that he had consumed some poisonous substance they rushed him to Bishnah Hospital where the doctors on duty referred the patient to Government Medical College, Jammu where he got admitted and the initial treatment of the case was started at the new emergency ward,” said a friend of the patient. He informed that afterwards except the wife of the patient they all went outside as only one attendant is allowed inside the ward. “Next day one of the doctors told the wife of the patient that her husband had to be put on a ventilator, however, the wife said that what’s the necessity of putting her husband on a ventilator when his condition is much better now and he is recovering quite well,” he said. “The doctors then asked her to give a written consent that they are taking discharge of the patient on their own and would seek medical treatment somewhere else. unknowingly signed the document and stopped the course of treatment,” he added. He further said that when we asked about the reasons for no treatment being given to the patient the hospital staff told that the consent to discharge the patient has been given so they cannot treat him now. “Following this development we approached a doctor who suggested us to bring the patient again and make a fresh file. I then told the doctor that the patient is still in the hospital and lying on the bed of the emergency ward. I was aghast by the hospital staff’s unprofessionalism. They were considering that the patient had been discharged on March 28 and were unaware that he was in the ward,” he said. “Having no other option we made a new file and requested the concerned doctor to go for a check-up of the patient but he refused to come and instead asked us to bring the patient to his room. It was quite weird that a patient whose saturation level was hovering around 70 had been summoned by the doctor to his room. I again requested the doctor to come along with us but he remained adamant,” he added. He further said that in the meantime the brother of the patient got agitated by the unprofessional attitude of the doctor and started to shout but what other option he had other than to yell. “When a person’s brother is on a death bed, what else can he do? He was helpless,” said the patient’s friend. “After going through this upheaval we then approached the CMO who also sided with the doctor and said that there is only one doctor on duty in the emergency so he cannot go upstairs to check the patient. The concerned doctor on the other hand refused to relent and said that he would check the patient only after the brother of the patient tenders an apology,” the friend added. |
