Outsiders call shots, natives suffer
4/3/2022 10:31:54 PM
A delegation of traders that called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti informed her that the government was facilitating the opening of Reliance Jio marts across Kashmir. The traders also told her that the opening of Reliance stores would hit their businesses hard.
After traders met Mehbooba she blamed the present dispensation in J&K of pulverizing the economy and messing it up. She tried to convey that the present government in Jammu and Kashmir is out to disempower the natives.
Many people in J&K have started believing that they were better off when Article 370 was in vogue as their rights remained protected. After August 5, 2019—when the J&K’s special status was revoked— things have changed drastically. Many new private players have entered into J&K and are calling the shots. The local businessmen are of the opinion that the outside players, including Reliance Jio Marts, can capture the markets in the Union Territory and the native businessmen can face a difficult time ahead. A notion is being created that the outsiders are welcome and natives have to fall in the line.
An attempt is being made to give space to only such people who can make huge investments. Small businessmen are feeling choked and helpless. The delegation of traders who called on Mehbooba consisted of distributors, who are feeling the heat of the changed government policies. They have realized that they cannot survive for long if the same trend continues. The politicians are making an attempt to raise their issues but it’s not making any difference as no one in the administration seems interested in listening to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Bureaucrats are running the show according to their whims and fancies. They are doing whatever they want. A common man in J&K seems to have no say as no one is accessible to him. Forget the common man, even the BJP leaders on many occasions have put on record that they are helpless and their party is not running the J&K administration. But not many people in J&K are ready to accept that local BJP leaders are helpless.
A common man in J&K has understood that the local BJP leaders don’t want to annoy anyone and want to remain in good books, but they need to bear in mind that if they continue to do the same, they may end up on the losing side.
