Private schools dictating terms
4/12/2022 11:26:19 PM

A few private schools in Kashmir keeping books and uniforms available at particular shops only has once again exposed the system and has brought to fore that the Education Department hasn’t been able to keep these big institutions under check.
Pictures of parents standing in serpentine queues outside a few particular shops have gone viral on the social media with people asking why these uniforms weren’t made available in different shops across the city? Had these schools done so, parents would not have faced inconvenience and the chaos would have been less.
All this is happening under the watchful eyes of the Jammu and Kashmir School Education Department. The department had issued clear instructions to the private schools that they should not force the parents to buy the uniforms and books from any particular shop. These schools have clearly violated the government orders and are dictating terms to the parents.
The management of these schools do not understand that the past two years have been difficult for everyone as the Covid-19 hit everyone hard. People have lost their jobs, businesses and other sources of income. Things have not been that easy. These schools should facilitate the return of children to the classes rather than making it difficult for them by issuing arbitrary diktats.
One can understand that uniform is an important part of the school curriculum but it should be available everywhere rather than it being available at a few particular shops only. The Education Department needs to wake up rather than allowing these schools to call the shots and do whatever they like. The department cannot shrug off the responsibility. It has to ensure that the students in private schools are not exploited by the managements of these institutions. If the department fails to act the people will assume that it’s also hand in glove with these schools and is allowing them to violate the rules. If the private schools are not stopped at this point of time, it will encourage these institutions to devise new ways and methods to make the parents fall in line. The helmsmen need to take note otherwise it will become routine and it can lead to the exploitation of children studying in the private schools.
