Power Crisis | | | Jammu region witnessing power cuts in April month has punctured the tall claims of the government about J&K being made self-reliant vis-à-vis power generation. It’s for the first time in the past so many years that the Jammu region has started witnessing the power cuts with summer just stepping in. It means that people of Jammu should get ready to face hot summer. Power cuts this early mean that the Power Department is facing shortage and it can increase in coming months. Earlier during the months of February, March, and April, the Jammu region used to receive uninterrupted power supply but this year the situation has changed completely. Electricity is playing hide and seek with the consumers despite them paying hefty bills. The unscheduled power cuts in Jammu region have put a big question mark on the claims of the government which keep on trumpeting about J&K having huge hydro potential. To address the crisis, the Power Department will have to purchase the electricity at very high rates. But it seems this time around the government is not interested in making additional purchases and wants to run the system by resorting to load shedding and power cuts. The curtailment has plunged the entire Jammu region into darkness. During the last past 10- days Jammu region has witnessed pesky power cuts. In many areas power shutdown has been announced officially while in other areas no announcement was made but power was snapped. The given electricity scenario seems to be grim and in the coming days the situation is set to worsen. There are reports that the Power Department is facing a shortage of nearly 300 to 600 Megawatts and if it sticks to its decision about not to purchase the electricity from the Northern Grid then the consumers are all set to face difficult times in the coming days. People are asking relevant questions like, on one hand, the Power Department is installing smart meters, while on the other it’s unable to provide us with electricity. The helmsmen need to put their act together and ensure that the power crisis is resolved before it blows into a major issue. |
