Power crisis: ‘Powerful coterie’ in JK admin sabotages requisition to Northern Grid!

Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 27: While Jammu and Kashmir faces “worst ever power crises” with the winter capital region bearing the brunt in scorching heat, what is even shocking is that a “powerful coterie” in the J&K administration is allegedly sabotaging the much-needed requisition seeking more electricity from New Delhi. Whereas the energy requirement for Jammu and Kashmir is around 3000 MW -1700 MWs for Kashmir and 1300 MW for Jammu, the Union Territory is unable to get more than half of the energy requirements which is some 1500 MW, due to energy constraints at the Northern Grid.
Given the shortfall of energy, Jammu in particular is facing around 12 hours of power cuts, while the industrial sector is at the verge of closure.
Official sources in the Power Development Department said that power shortage from Northern Grid, which feeds Jammu and Kashmir was nothing new but that this time some “forces in J&K government were reluctant to strongly demand more power only to give a rosy picture of the state of affairs.”
“To hide their misgivings in the form of ruthless corruption and other misadventures, a coterie calling the shots in Jammu and Kashmir is trying to give an impression to the New Delhi that they are competent enough to run the UT even in power crises. Otherwise the government is empowered to send requisition to the Northern Grid as also to the Union Ministry to overcome supply demand gap,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
He said to overcome the crises, the Raj Bhawan was empowered to sent a formal requisition to the Union Power Ministry headed by RK Singh seeking his intervention. “Such situations had arisen several times in the past as well but were duly tackled with a firm foot by JK.”
Sources said New Delhi had got some “bad inputs” about the performance of this “coterie in JK and that now to whitewash their progress card full of misdeeds they are trying to give a rosy picture by taking people for a ride.”
The officials in Civil Secretariat said it was for the first time that “Raj Bhawan looks unmoved by the public agony due to power crises” by not opting for a serious negotiations with the Northern Grid.” “If there is no such crises even in neighboring Punjab, why is only Jammu and Kashmir suffering unheard?” asked the officials at the Civil Secretariat.
The National Grid is the high-voltage electricity transmission network in India, connecting power stations and major substations and ensuring that electricity generated anywhere in India can be used to satisfy demand elsewhere.
The National Grid is owned, and maintained by the state-owned Power Grid Corporation of India and operated by the state-owned Power System Operation Corporation.
The Jammu and Kashmir government however has been saying that it was trying its best to overcome the power crises at an earliest.
