Andhera Qayam Rahe: Despite fresh imports, Jammu struggles to get half of power needs!

Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 29: Even as following massive public outcry over prolonged power cuts in Jammu and Kashmir, the central government has allocated 207 MW additional power to the union territory, the winter capital region “struggles to get even fifty percent of the power requirement.”
Official sources said, in the first week of April 2021, the power demand for Jammu division was around 830 MW per day and was expected to rise to 1000 MW given the scorching heat, when energy consumption is expected to be more for obvious reasons.
But given the shortage of power, Jammu was unable to get more than 400 MW of power thereby putting the people to terrible inconvenience. Sources said even after getting the additional imports, the Power Development Department or PDD is unable to offer much to Jammu.
“As of now Jammu is getting around 500 MW of power per day and this is no more than almost fifty percent of what is needed. This is the failure on the part of the PDD babus that the people have been put to such helplessness,” said some senior officials on the condition of anonymity.
It is for the second consecutive year that Jammu is reeling under darkness in hot summer due to power outages, which have badly affected normal life across the region.
While last year the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, had seemingly apologized to the people of Jammu for the power crisis, this time the LG looks silent as the official at the helm at the PDD, who is accused of misadventures that pushed the Union Territory to darkness, is believed to be his close aide.
The people of Jammu have been taking to streets and have sought intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi into the alleged misadventures of the Raj Bhawan and how the “erring officials were being pampered.”
“See, the point is very simple. Some blacksheep in the administration have been sabotaging the vision of Modi Ji and it’s New Delhi which needs to make Raj Bhawan accountable,” said an observer.
