J&K’s Power Department exposed again
Despite GOI’s additional 200Mws, power scenario continues to remain dismal
4/30/2022 11:17:23 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 30: What could expose the inefficacy of the power department in Jammu and Kashmir is the fact that in spite of the central government providing 200MWs of additional power, the electricity scenario continues to remain dismal in the erstwhile state.
Reports inform that in the midst of the power crisis prevailing in Jammu and Kashmir, even two hundred MW of additional power given could not provide any relief to the people. There are prolonged cuts throughout the day. The interruption in power supply had a direct impact on water supply as well. On the other hand, demonstrations were also held at different places regarding electricity and water.
According to the Electricity Department, in addition to the 600 MW already being given in Jammu division, 100 MW of additional power was given. Here the total availability went up to 700 MW but it was not even half of the total demand (1500 MW). Similarly, in addition to the regular supply of 700 MW in Kashmir, 100 MW of additional power was given.
The total supply went up to 800 MW. Which was not even half of the demand (1700 MW) here on Friday. Due to this, power cuts in urban areas took half to two hours. At the same time, long power cuts continued in rural areas. Due to this the water supply was affected.
Two hundred MW power has been received. 700 MW power has been provided in Jammu division. However, there is no respite from frequent outages in the region.
Pertinently, there is a demand of 3100 MW of electricity every day. In contrast, only 1937 MW could be made available in the state. In a bid to further hound the already crisis-ridden business fraternity, Orders have been issued to curtail power supplies in industrial areas in Jammu from 6 to 9 am Samba, Kathua, and Udhampur from 5 to 8 pm. The PDD as per the reports has directed the Jammu division to ensure consumption below 870 MW and Kashmir below 1150 MW. It is being informed that the way the temperatures have surged rapidly in the last few days, the state has consumed 400 MW more power from the northern grid.
At present, the demand for electricity in Jammu and Kashmir is 2800 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA), while the supply is being made close to 1800 MVA. Due to this people have to bear long power cuts. Water supply is also getting affected due to lack of adequate power supply. People say that the government's claims of providing 24 hours electricity have started proving to be hollow.
