India seal QF berth in Uber Cup | | | agencies BANGKOK, May 10: India women's badminton team sailed into the quarter-finals with a 4-1 win over USA in their Group D tie on Tuesday. Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist P V Sindhu once again led the proceedings with a 21-10, 21-11 win over Jennie Gai. The Indian raced to take a 16-4 lead in the first game and there was no looking back for her as she wrapped up the contest in just 26 minutes. Doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Treesa Jolly extended India's advantage with a 21-19, 21-10 victory over Francesca Corbett and Allison Lee. The Indians were trailing 5-11 in the opening game but bounced back to turn the tables in their favour. The second game was a straightforward affair as Crasto and Jolly took a 12-0 lead before finishing off the match with ease in 34 minutes. It was Aakarshi Kashyap's match that confirmed the tie for India as she registered a 21-18, 21-11 win over Esther Shi. USA pulled a point back, with Lauren Lam and Kodi Tang Lee edging out Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker 12-21, 21-17, 13-21 in the second doubles match of the tie. However, youngster Ashmita Chaliha completed the 4-1 scoreline for India after moving past Natalie Chi 21-18, 21-13 in the final rubber of the day. The victory over USA, coupled with a 4-1 win against Canada on Sunday, confirms India a top two finish along with South Korea in the Uber Cup Group D as well as a berth in the top eight. India will meet Korea on Wednesday to settle the group winners. Meanwhile, India men's team, who confirmed their quarters berth in the Thomas Cup on Monday, will also be in action on May 11 for their final Group C match against Chinese Taipei. Both India men's and women's teams went down in the quarter-finals of the Thomas and Uber Cup 2020 held last year. |
