Mehbooba flays LG for breaking rules, performing pooja at ASI-protected temple | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 10: Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha has courted controversy by offering pooja at a temple protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) recently, with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti stating on Monday that he "brazenly flouts simple rules". Sinha took part in the auspicious 'Navgrah Ashtamangalam Pooja' at the ancient Martand Sun temple in Mattan in south Kashmir two days back. The Pooja was held in the presence of saints, members of Kashmiri Pandit community and local residents. "While thousands of Kashmiris are jailed on frivolous charges, the head of the state brazenly flouts simple rules like performing puja at an ASI protected site," Mehbooba Mufti tweeted. "Governance in J&K has been reduced to acts of puja & oppressing people into silence," the former Chief Minister added in the tweet. Her comments came after ASI reportedly expressed objections over Sinha's action, claiming it was in violation of rules. According to the rules, no activity can be undertaken at a monument, which has been declared as ASI-protected. It is to preserve such monuments. A statement issued by the J&K government on May 8 after the pooja said the Lt Governor termed the event as a truly divine experience. On the occasion, the Lt Governor reiterated the Government's commitment to protect and develop ancient sites of cultural and spiritual significance. |
