Naya J&K: Kashmir netas divided over tributes to Mirwaiz, Lone!

Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, May 21: The mainstream politicians of Kashmir remained divided over paying tributes to Mirwaiz Molvi Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone on their death anniversaries falling on May 21, which also coincides with the assassination anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Former minister and Peoples Conference, President, Sajad Lone took to the social media to pay tributes to his own father, Abdul Gani Lone. The son, however, refrained from paying tributes to Mirwaiz, who was his father’s close friend and colleague. Lone was killed while attending a function held in connection with the death anniversary of Mirwaiz.
Sajad said his father was killed by terrorists. “Remembering my father Abdul Gani Lone. Every year as 21st May approaches I start trembling. Those painful moments/memories— of a family receiving the Bullet ridden body of their loved one. Those moments of helplessness follow you all your life,” Sajad Tweeted.
“Every time a person is killed in our valley, I can visualise what must be happening at his or her home. The teary eyed wails of the loved ones, the anguish—- it is all so same,” he added.
“My father was killed for saying what he believed in. Those who killed him were terrorists and will Inshallah rot in hell. As will all those terrorists who kill unarmed innocent civilians,” he said adding “For my father and for all those who have laid down their lives in this conflict All I pray for is peace. May no bullet ridden dead bodies be delivered to families. May this madness end. May sanity prevail.”
Former Chief Minister, and National Conference President, Omar Abdullah, on the other hand, paid tributes glowing tributes to former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi on his assassination anniversary but seemingly refrained from paying tributes to Mirwaiz and Lone.
Senior politician, MY Tarigami however paid tributes to Mirwaiz and Lone. “We pay homage to Mirwaiz Maulvi Farooq sb and Abdul Gani Lone sb on their respective death anniversaries. Both the leaders had firm faith in dialogue and strived for promotion of harmony and strengthening of bonds among communities,” Tarigami said.
Till late afternoon, Mehbooba Mufti’s social media handles were also silent on the issue. Observers said the “change or division of opinion” has been brought by the idea of Naya Jammu and Kashmir as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Actually nobody among the Kashmir politicians now wants to carry the baggage of separatists and thus want to stay away from anything which reflects their past,” said a political observer adding “that the abrogation of the so called special status has brought a sea change in the mindsets in Kashmir.”
