Fruit growers & dealers protest at Sopore fruit mandi over halting of trucks on NH-44 | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 2: Fruit growers and dealers on Saturday staged a protest at Fruit Mandi Sopore in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir over alleged halting of fruit-laden trucks along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway due to the security measures taken in wake of Amarnath Yatra. The growers said the early varieties of fruit- plum, apricot, peach, pear and Hazratbali apple- have limited shelf life and should reach mandis outside J&K as soon as possible and the halting of the trucks along the highway was incurring heavy financial losses. Presently harvesting of early varieties is in full swing. The President of Fruit Association Apple town Sopore, Fayaz Ahmad Malik alleged that the trucks drivers ferrying fruits to other parts of the country are stopped along the highway due to the security arrangements which are in place for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. “The Yatris are welcome but administration must take immediate steps to ensure smooth transportation of fresh fruit-laden trucks without any disturbance,”he added He said more than 100 trucks are being dispatched to outside J&K on daily basis and the halting of the trucks along the highway is causing losses especially when the crop is good. “Due to the frequent halting of trucks, the drivers are refusing to lift fruit from mandis causing huge losses to the growers,” he added The protesting growers said they raised the issue with the top officials but they have failed to rectify this. “Now we have written to Lt Governor and sought his intervention,” Malik said, adding that if the halting of trucks continued in coming days, the fruit industry in J&K will get worst hit A senior official of the horticulture said when they get any such complaint, they take it up immediately with police authorities to ensure smooth flow of the fruit trucks to other parts of the country. Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said all transporters be it meat or fruit suppliers are suffering massive losses. “J&K's economy already in free fall since 2019 is being further crippled due to harassment caused under the pretext of security on the national highway. All transporters be it meat or fruit suppliers are suffering massive losses,” she tweeted. Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police Department recently issued a traffic advisory in connection with the Amarnath yatra for facilitating Yatris on Jammu Srinagar highway. |
