Timely action saved many lives | | | As the efforts are on to restore holy Amarnath Yatra, which got halted due to the cloud burst near the cave shrine. The tragedy near Amarnath cave shrine left everyone grieved and plunged the entire country into mourning. The role played by the rescue teams was commendable. The entire nation is indebted to them. Soon after the tragedy struck the Indian Army deployed men and machinery including latest equipment to carry out the rescue operations. These rescue teams were equipped with specialized rescue equipment to undertake the operation. The rescue efforts continued all throughout the night. The soldiers carrying hand-held thermal imagers, night vision devices and other gadgets were deployed for the search operations. Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen ADS Aujla and Major General Sanjiv Singh Slaria, GOC of counter insurgency Kilo Force visited the Holy Cave early in the morning to review the rescue and medical efforts. The civil administration also left no stone unturned to reach out to the trapped pilgrims. The timely efforts of the Army and civil administration saved many lives. According to the India Meteorological Department or IMD the flash floods near the Amarnath Cave may not have been caused by the cloudburst. The IMD claimed that flash floods could have been triggered by highly localised rain event. The IMD stated that the shrine reported 31 mm of rainfall between 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm on Friday, which is quite low to be categorised as a cloudburst. The tragedy near Amarnath Cave Shrine is an eye opener. It has proven that even the localized rainfall can lead to devastation. The authorities in future should ensure that if there is localized rainfall during Yatra days it can also pose a threat and this needs to be borne in mind. The safety of pilgrims is paramount and it needs to be ensured. |
