Azad’s Dilemma
7/15/2022 11:24:44 PM
The infighting within the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee has brought the grand old party in J&K on crossroads.
Former J&K chief minister and veteran leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad, has reportedly refused to take over as the party chief in the Union Territory.
Azad’s refusal has provided his opponents with a chance to take a dig at him as most of them are saying that he is shying away from taking the responsibility.
Is it that Azad instead of accepting the challenge and taking up the responsibility wants to pass on the baton to someone else? Has he realized that winning the elections is not going to be that easy in the changed political set up? The other factor that may be stopping Azad from taking the charge could be that he is aware that Congress leaders have failed to play a role of a strong opposition in J&K during all these years.
The factionalism within the Congress Party and the leaders not raising the issues of people have pushed the “grand old party” to the brink. There are speculations that Azad may suggest a name of his aide who can head the party.
There were reports that to end uncertainty and chaos within the Congress Party, the high command had decided to give charge to Azad. But the veteran leader is hesitant. Azad is a seasoned politician and he knows that his party leaders went into oblivion after the NC-Congress regime lost power in 2014. He is aware that to woo the voters is not going to be that easy this time around.
Azad it seems wants to remain in the background till the Congress regains the ground it has lost. And to regain the lost ground is a Herculean task. Azad has valid reasons to stay away and these cannot be ignored. If a leader of his stature fails to revive the Congress in J&K then no one can do it.
As on date the Congress high command is left with no other option other than Azad as he is the only one who has earned loyalists and they are the leaders, who didn’t change their loyalties. Neither did they look for greener pastures. If Azad is hesitant, anyone from his group can be chosen as JKPCC chief. If the Congress high command decides otherwise it can lead to the party getting split in J&K.
