KVK, educates Farmers on Lemon Grass Farming | | | EArly Times Report
Jammu, July 24: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) is educating the farmers on scientific cultivation of lemon grass farming and promoting this crop in monkeys affected areas of Reasi district of J&K. Many new farmers are showing keein interest in this crop and coming forward for its farming. According to Sr. Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr.Banarsi Lal, some belts of Reasi distt. are severely affected by the monkeys menace and lemongrass farming has immense potential in these areas. He said that KVK, Reasi is making strenuous efforts to minimize the effect of monkey menace in the area and for that purpose KVK is technically supporting the farmers and advising the farmers for its post-harvesting processing techniques. He informed that lemongrass is a viable crop and not damaged by the monkeys.He added that lemon grass farming can generate some self-employment avenues among the rural youths. He further said that lemon grass possesses number of medicinal uses such as carminative and insect repellent, perfumes, cosmetics, herbal teas and non-alcoholic beverages. He narrated that lemon grass oil has strong lemon-like fragrance, due to high percentage of citral in its oil and by selling this oil farmers can enhance their income and employment. He informed that once the lemon grass crop is planted in the field it remains for more than five years in the field and under normal conditions, three harvests are feasible during the first year, and 3-4 in subsequent years, depending on the management practices followed by the farmers. He also added that many farmers are showing keen interest in lemon grass farming as this grass has immense potential in the region and can be grown by the farmers in their fallow land. He stressed on the cluster approach in its cultivation and urged farmers to grow it collectively. He informed that through its value addition farmers can fetch more returns. He expressed that if grown commercially, lemongrass can be a boon to the farmers.
