Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 1: Given the continued destruction of our ecosystems, needless felling of trees, and reduction of our shared public green spaces, a Green Campus drive was organized at SKUAST-Jammu today. It was an initiative of the Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Dr. J.P. Sharma and organized through the Environment and Social Safety Cell of the IDP SKUAST Jammu to increase the green cover of the SKUAST-J. A tree plantation drive was carried out at Chatha Campus in which around 400 seedlings of Neem, Shisham, Drenk, Amaltas, Sukh Chain, Bottlebrush, Kaner, Kachnar were planted. Prof. J.P. Sharma inaugurated the programme by planting a sapling of Gulmohar. Speaking on the occasion, he emphasized that trees are an important part of every community that create a peaceful and aesthetically pleasing environment. While enumerating the benefits of the trees, he said that trees contribute to the environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. He advised the students to adopt each tree planted by them till their stay in the campus. More than 100 undergraduate students participated in the event. The green campus drive was organized in collaboration with National Service Scheme (NSS) wing of SKUAST-J, Division of Agroforestry and Social Forestry Department of JKUT.
