Teachers need to work hard on students
8/8/2022 11:27:33 PM

A survey carried out by the Jammu and Kashmir State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has revealed that the average performance of students has declined among the students of Class-III, Class-V and Class-VIII in comparison to 2017.
The experts are attributing the decline in performance of students to the learning gaps that widened due to Covid-19 lockdown and school closure.
Schools have to work hard on students to ensure that their grades improve and the learning losses that were faced during the Covid period are covered.
The survey has revealed that differences in the learning levels among the students of a same class have increased and 57 percent of the students have scored less than 50 percent in the assessment survey.
The survey has shown that the percentage of children enrolled in government schools rose from 64.3% in 2018 to 65.8% in 2020, dramatically going up to 70.3% in 2021. On the contrary, the enrolment rate in private schools declined from 28.8% in 2020 to 24.4% last year as per the survey which was conducted over the telephone and covering 76,706 households in 17,184 villages.
The survey should serve as an eye-opener for the Education Department as it needs to formulate a comprehensive policy to address the learning losses that students have faced during the pandemic time. The need of the hour is to come up with the remedial measures so that students cope with the loss which they faced due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Teachers will have to put in extra efforts to ensure that students don’t lose interest in studies and discontinue their education. Meticulous planning is required to improve the learning levels of students and bring about qualitative improvements.
The pandemic had a silver lining to the percentage of rural children who were not enrolled in schools has doubled during the past two years. The government schools have seen an increase in enrolment. Over a third of children enrolled in Classes 1 and 2 had never attended school in person till the schools reopened in the beginning of 2022.
To overcome the learning losses is a big challenge for the teachers and schools, but people are hopeful that the educational institutions will utilize all resources to fill in the void that was created by the pandemic.
