NABARD celebrates National Handloom Day | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 16: NABARD, Jammu & Kashmir Regional Office observed the National Handloom Day on 12th August 2022. Dr. Vikas Gupta, Director, Handicrafts & Handloom, Jammu, Govt. of J&K (UT) was the Guest of Honour on the occasion. The meeting was also attended by Megha Baogia, Deputy Director, Handicrafts & Handloom, govt. of J&K and other officers of NABARD. Sandeep Sharma, General Manager, NABARD welcomed the dignitaries to the programme and apprised the house that there is a need of support of marketing to artisans, innovations, skill upgradation, persuading youth in handloom and improvement in design to enable better price realisation to handloom weavers. A detailed presentation on handloom sector and NABARD's interventions for the development of the sector in UTs of J&K and Ladakh was given by NABARD. A presentation on various schemes of the Govt. for the development of handloom sector was also given by the Handloom and Handicrafts department. Around 25 prominent weavers of J&K were felicitated for their outstanding contribution to the handloom sector. Thereafter, there was an elaborate discussion on the issues and challenges of handloom sector and a future roadmap for the development of this sector. Guest of Honour, Dr. Vikas Gupta in his address, highlighted the need for the revival and modernization of the handloom sector. He also appreciated the initiatives taken by NABARD's towards the development of handloom sector. Giving the guiding remarks on the occasion, Dr. Ajay Kumar Sood, Chief General Manager, NABARD highlighted the important role played by the handloom sector in providing employment in the rural and semi rural areas. He stated that NABARD, with its mandate for fostering rural prosperity, has been working very closely for the development of the handloom sector through its various promotional schemes like- Rural marts, Exhibitions, Off farm producers organizations (OFPOs), Skill development Programmes, GI tagging, etc. and will continue to support and empower the workers in this sector. He further informed that NABARD is organizing a national level exhibition from 26th September-02nd October 2022 at Kala Kendra, near Bikram Chowk, Jammu.This Mela will be a great opportunity for the artisans to showcase and market their handloom & handicraft products as well as for the local crowd to buy unique products from all over India.
