Thank you teachers | | | ‘Teachers’ Day’ was observed amidst fanfare with students getting an opportunity to thank their teachers for building their lives and showing them the right path. Teachers’ Day is celebrated every year on September 5 to mark the birthday of the country’s former President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on this day in 1888. When Dr Radhakrishan took the office of the second President of India in 1962, his students approached him to seek permission to celebrate September 5 as a special day. Dr Radhakrishnan instead made a request of them to observe September 5, as Teachers’ Day, to recognize the contribution of teachers to the society. Since then it is celebrated as Teachers’ Day. Teachers have played a pivotal role in building the country. They have given scientists, engineers, doctors, lawyers, business tycoons, leaders and great intellectuals to the country but they have always remained unsung heroes. Teachers Day is an occasion to acknowledge the contribution of teachers towards nation building and their selfless services. Teachers after building the careers of their students never seek anything from them in return. It’s the duty of the country to repay them as they are the ones who nurture brilliant minds and put them on a right path. Along with the passage of time, teaching methods have changed and so have the teachers. The new generation of teachers is tech-savy and it proved its mettle during the Covid times. When the pandemic forced schooling to move online for the better part of two years, without any doubt the teachers pulled off in inspiring ways in ensuring continuity of learning, mostly remotely. They took various initiatives to drive home a point that “Where there is a will there’s a way.” The policy makers need to bear in mind that times are changing and the teachers deserve a better deal. They need better salary packages and the facilities. Teachers need to be treated at par with other professionals. It’s the teachers who hold the key to turn children into responsible citizens. They reserve respect and the honours for the services they render. We as a society are indebted to them and have to be thankful to them for everything they have done for us. |
