Holiday on Maharaja’s birthday
9/16/2022 10:41:21 PM
Finally, the government has declared a public holiday on Maharaja Hari Singh’s birthday. A long pending demand of the Jammu people has been met.
When PDP-BJP coalition was in power in Jammu and Kashmir, the Legislative Council of the erstwhile State had passed a resolution on January 24, 2017, to declare a holiday on September 23 i.e. Maharaja’s birthday but after that no headway was made.
After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcated it into two Union Territories—the demand to declare Maharaja’s birthday as a public holiday gained momentum. Delegations of people from all walks of life met Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha with a request to declare September 23 as a holiday.
The decision taken by the government led by LG Sinha to declare Maharaja Hari Singh’s birthday as a public holiday has been hailed by one and all in Jammu region. It’s after 75-years of Independence that role played by late Maharaja Hari Singh in J&K’s accession to India has got recognition. The political regimes that ruled J&K till 2018 always undermined the demand of Jammu people to acknowledge the contributions of the late Maharaja.
People of Jammu have always hailed Maharaja’s role and whenever they have got an opportunity to thank the royal family they have done it.
People of Jammu strived hard to push for their demand even when Kashmir based politicians ruled Jammu and Kashmir. To declare a public holiday on Maharaja Hari Singh’s birthday was a collective demand of the Jammuties and the present dispensation has respected their sentiments and aspirations.
Late Maharaja Hari Singh had played a pivotal role in building Jammu and Kashmir as his tenure is considered to be the golden period in the history of the Himalayan region.
Jammu people have proven their loyalty to the late Maharaja by fighting for getting his birthday declared as a public holiday. They have proven beyond doubt that they will never forget the contributions of the late Maharaja and his family in building Jammu and Kashmir. By getting a holiday declared on his birthday they have shown their love and respect for the late ruler and they have also expressed their gratitude to LG Sinha led regime for fulfilling their long pending demand.
