Stop Taking Credit | | | After the declaration of a public holiday on the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh there is a race among political and social organizations to take credit for this historic decision. On Maharaja’s birthday many political parties and social organizations organized different programs to celebrate the occasion. The Congress Party also held an event to celebrate the birthday and the announcement of a holiday. The leaders who spoke on the occasion claimed that they always supported the demand to declare the Maharaja’s birthday as a holiday. They just fell short of claiming the credit for it. The Congress leaders seem to have forgotten that when they were in power they just ignored the requests of the Jammu people to ensure that the government declares Maharaja Hari Singh’s birthday as a holiday. Yuva Rajput Sabha in Jammu strived hard to fight for getting Maharaja’s birthday declared as a holiday. The first practical and concrete initiative was taken by Ajatshtru Singh, grandson of Maharaja Hari Singh, when he moved a resolution in the Legislative Council on January 24, 2017, during the PDP-BJP regime. The historic resolution was unanimously passed in the Upper House of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. It laid a strong foundation for the demand of Jammu people being met. Apart from Ajatshatru Singh, activists of Yuva Rajput Sabha faced all odds and continued their struggle till they achieved their target. After the J&K Government led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha declared that September 23, i.e. Maharaja Hari Singh’s birthday will be a public holiday in the Union Territory, the political parties are trying to take the credit for it. The politicians should show some maturity and give due credit to the people of Jammu rather than claiming that their efforts have borne fruit. People of Jammu are aware of the fact that neither the Congress, nor the BJP could convince their coalition partners i.e. National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to announce the holiday on Maharaja’s birthday. The holiday on the Maharaja’s birthday is an achievement of Jammu people and not of any political party. Politicians should stop taking credit for the feat and acknowledge it as a victory of people and not their achievement. |
